“Incel” Subculture: From Toxic Masculinity to Domestic Terrorism

"Incels", short for Involuntary Celibates, are members of a subculture of men who define themselves as unable to find a romantic or sexual partner despite desiring one. Incels externalize blame for their misfortune and can exhibit toxic, angry, and violent behaviors. Several mass murders, including campus shootings, have been committed by those who identify with Incel ideology. Attendees will gain a working definition of Incels, review several acts of violence perpetuated by Incels over the past three decades, and discuss online social networks that perpetuate Incel ideology.

Consulting

Employee misconduct & Violence risk

One of your employees is raising potential safety concerns and you are unsure what course of action you should take. Do you document the red flags? Do you hire an investigator? Do you take formal employment action? Do you wait and see? If you find yourself overwhelmed or uneasy about your next steps with an employee misconduct matter, a consultation can help bring confidence and clarity.

"Not on my campus”: preventing targeted violence in education

Every parent, teacher, professor and administrator want to keep their students safe. However, safe schools and colleges do not just “happen”; they are cultivated. In order to protect campuses from threats of targeted violence, school officials must be prepared. Attendees of this presentation will learn about best practices in school and university safety. Presenters will share lessons learned from prior attacks and thwarted attacks in school and college settings. Attendees will learn to identify warning signs among students and will be taught how to respond appropriately when confronted with a potential threat on their campus.

Student misconduct & violence risk

One of your students is causing alarm or fear. Your staff, faculty, teachers, or parents are concerned and turn to you for help. You may have protocols to follow but this situation falls outside of the scope of typical behavioral concerns. You are not sure what to do and you do not want to make things worse. If you find yourself doubting your next steps, consultation can help you determine the best course of action in your situation.

“Love, lust, & Lethality”: when romance turns to workplace violence

She breaks up with him; he follows her to work; he kills her. Unfortunately, disgruntled lovers attack and kill women at their place of work far too often. Employers may be aware that a worker is having “trouble at home”, but unsure of what to do or of what might happen. This presentation teaches employers and employees about best practices for preventing this type of violence in the workplace. Attendees will learn about specific risk factors such as stalking and monitoring behaviors. Supervisors and administrators will be given tools for how to best support a vulnerable employee.
